The Vale of Glamorgan is a county borough on the South coast of Wales with a population of just over 123,000 and an area of 208 sq miles. Agriculture is the main industry in the region.
Barry is the largest town in The Vale of Glamorgan with 50,000 inhabitants and is a popular tourist resort for nearby Cardiff and Wales in general, it has a various beaches and pleasure rides. Barry has been settled since medieval times however the population only really expanded during the Industrial Revolution in the 1880s in particular. Barry was concerned with export and transport of coal mined elsewhere in Wales and a coal dock was finished in 1889. Barry was also a busy port and ship repair was also a major employer during this period. Barry Island was actually an island until it was joined by the Barry docks to the mainland in the 1880s
St Donat’s Castle lies on high cliffs near Cardiff and dates back to the 12th century, however was extensively rebuilt during the 15th and 16th centuries. St Donat’s Castle now houses Atlantic College an independent Sixth Form college.
