 | About Rhondda, Cynon, Taff |
|
Rhondda, Cynon, Taff is a county in South Wales between Caerphilly to the East and Bridgend to the West, with a population of over 230,000 making it the second most inhibited place in Wales after Cardiff. The name reflects the three rivers that run through the area: The River Taff, the River Cynon and the River Rhondda.
The main industries in Rhondda, Cynon, Taff are extraction of coal and export of coal through Barry and Cardiff docks. Due to the dwindling stocks of coal the area was economically hard hit but redevelopment from the Welsh Development Agency has invested in the region with increased tourism including salmon fishing in the Taff Valley. There are still a few open cast mines in the North of the region while the deep mines have been closed.
Most of the housing in the region is based on the housing built for the miners and their families and lies in tightly packed rows of Victorian terraced houses. |
