 | About Isle of Anglesey |
|
Isle of Anglesey is an island of the North West of Wales which is connected by the Britannia Suspension Bridge (designed by Robert Stephenson) to the mainland. The population of the Isle of Anglesey is just over 68,000 and over 70% of inhabitants speak Welsh (either fluently or partially) which is the second highest in the whole of Wales. The population is evenly spread around small towns and villages across the islands.
Holyhead is the largest town in the Isle of Anglesey and has over 11,000 inhabitants. Holyhead is actually on a separate island (Holy Island) connected by bridge. Holyhead’s main industries are bauxite refining and aluminium smelting.
King Arthur the fabled regent had a stronghold at Beaumaris, the county town of the island of Anglesey.
The Isle of Anglesey officially has the longest place name in the UK ‘Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch’.
The Isle of Anglesey was a centre of the Druids until the Romans attacked them from 60AD although the Boadicean Revolt interrupted this invasion. The Romans did have time to destroy shrines and sacred groves which were never replaced. Through the years the Isle of Anglesey was invaded by Irish Pirates, the Romans, the Saxons, the French Normans and the English. |
