Carmarthenshire is a unitary authority in the South West part of Wales with a population of 178,000 and main towns Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Pendine and Ammandford. More than half of the inhabitants of Carmarthenshire have Welsh as their first language, with most of the rest speaking English and smaller communities of other languages.
There are many castles and keeps in Carmarthenshire due to its strategic position on the South coast, these include: Kidwelly Castle, Carreg Cennon, Laugharne Castle, Llansteffan Castle and Tailey Castle.
Llanelli (pronounced with a soft ‘C’ at the start) is the largest town in Carmarthenshire with a population of 44,000 and its name means ‘Church of St Ellis’ in English. It is famous for rugby, brewing, Llanelli Waterside and seafaring. |
