 | About Caerphilly |
|
Caerphilly is a town in South Wales with a population of 31,000 and is placed just outside the suburbs of Cardiff. Due to it’s location it is considered to be a commuter town for workers in Cardiff and Newport.
Industries include dairy (Caerphilly Cheese), coal mining and the railway.
Caerphilly Castle is the second largest castle in the UK (after Windsor Castle in England) and was built from 1268 to 1271 by the Norman Lord Gilbert de Clare. The castle has been in disrepair during several periods since but is still an important tourist attraction. The castle is built on concentric lines and will always have a place in Welsh hearts after being captured by Welsh nationalist hero Owain Gldwr-holding out against the English for 100 days in 1403. |
