 | About Bridgend |
|
Bridgend is a unitary authority in the South of Wales half way between Cardiff and Swansea with a population of just over 39,000. The name Bridgend comes from the original bridge over the River Ogmore which runs from North of Treorchy and runs down to sea in the South past Bridgend itself and is famous across the UK for its Salmon., Sea Trout and Grayling fishing
Bridgend is contained in an area known by the appellation of ‘The Valleys’ due to its hilly geography.
Coal mining during the 17th century was replaced as the main industry by aerospace, IT, administration and fishing and redevelopment of the riverside area featuring various shopping precincts.
The town of Bridgend itself was settled by the Romans who built a town and roads which are still the basis of travel to this day, other settlers included the Normans and of course the English. |
