 | About South Lanarkshire |
|
South Lanarkshire is a county in the centre of Scotland, South of Glasgow which contains many of the suburbs of the city. South Lanarkshire borders on Glasgow and the border regions of Scotland having a population of over 310,000 making it the 5th largest in Scotland. Towns in the county are Hamilton, Cambuslang, East Kilbride, Blantyre, Larkhall and Rutherglen.
Hamilton is the third largest town in Scotland (population of 49,000) and is 12 miles from Glasgow. Hamilton was originally called Cadzow, but its name was changed in tribute to the Hamilton family who built many of the land mark building still extant. The focal point of the town is the ‘Townhouse and Library’ and was given a multi million pound refurbishment in 2002. Major employers in the area are service industries, electronics, finance and local government.
Bothwell Castle is a medieval castle just off the River Clyde built by the Murray Clan, but has subsequently changed hands several times through the years and has played its part in the Wars of Independence with England. The keep provided shelter for English noblemen after the Scot victory at Bannockburn in 1314.
Famous people from South Lanarkshire are: explorer David Livingstone and Tea magnate Thomas Lipton. |
