 | About Scottish Borders |
|
Scottish Borders is a county on the South East of Scotland North of Cumbria in England and South of Edinburgh with a population of 110,000. The River Tweed runs horizontally from West to East forming a natural border between England and Scotland, the region is hilly and rugged with much of the land uninhabited. The largest habitation include: Hawick, Peebles, Roxburgh, Melrose, Selkirk, Jedburgh and Galashiels.
The two main industries are livestock (sheep) centred at the auction-mart at Newtown St Boswells, luxury textiles, grain and milling.
The Borders are associated with Rugby Union in the same way the Welsh valleys are and have a proud tradition of supplying many players for the Scottish National team.
Famous Borders residents include: 39 Steps author John Buchan and African explorer Mungo Park. Due to its strategic position the Borders has always been a stop on the journey South (Bonnie Prince Charlie, and King John of Scotland) and North (King Edward John of Balliol) for conquest. |
