Perth and Kinross is a county in the centre of Scotland, South of Highland and North of Fife, with a population of 140,000 and an area of 2040 sq miles. Perth and Kinross comprises the large town of Perth and smaller towns such as Kinross, Crieff, Invergowrie, Pitlochry and Auchterarder.
Perth has 43,000 inhabitants and so no longer has official City status. Perth is traditionally an affluent, historic settlement based on grey stone buildings most constructed during the Industrial Revolution. John Knox the Christian Reformer started his campaign in Perth’s St John the Baptist church, the subsequent riot spilling out onto the streets of the town.
Every year since 1996 Balado has hosted the ‘T in the Park’ music festival, which sees tens of thousands of hardy music lovers descending on Balado for 3 days of pop music and fun. Top bands from the UK and USA are a common appearance as is torrential rain during the unpredictable Scottish summer.
Part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park is inside the bounds of Perth and Kinross, its highlights are Loch Lommond and Ben Lommond a mountain reaching over 3,200 feet above sea level.
Scone Palace is a Georgian Gothic building made from reclaimed red sandstone in 1808 from remains of previous 16th century buildings. Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scotland at Scone in 1306 and several other regents have been crowned there since. |
