 | About Moray |
|
Moray is a county in the North East of Scotland with borders onto Highland to the West and Aberdeenshire to the East. Moray has a population of 86,000 and a land mass of 864 sq miles making it one of the least populated areas in the UK.
Historic Elgin is the largest town and commercial centre of Moray with a population of over 25,000. Celebrated Scots heroes such as Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), Macbeth King of Scotland and King David I amongst others spent time in the city. Elgin Cathedral was completed in the late 13th century and was an important seat of Bishops until the Reformation in the late 1600s, although Elgin Cathedral was restored to somewhere near its former glory in the 19th century.
Major employers in the area are the RAF bases at Lossimouth and Kinloss, which give important but indirect effects on the economy with shops, hotels and catering companies all benefiting. Other employers include construction, agriculture, manufacturing and fishing although employment as a whole is 6% below the Scottish average. |
