|
Fife is a county on the East coast of Scotland and has over 360,000 inhabitants making it one of the most populous counties in the UK. Fife is often called by Scots, ’The Kingdom of Fife’, due to the Pictish kingdom which the modern area is based on.
Dunfermline is the largest town in Fife and has over 39,000 inhabitants, and is a historical seat of Scottish kings until around 1070AD. Dunfermline Abbey was built by the Benedictine’s in 1128 under patronage by King David I, but there has been a monastery dating back to 1098 on the same site. It is has more Royal Scots buried there than any other site except Iona.
St Andrews is a picturesque and historical town with a population of 18,000, and from medieval times to the Reformation was the Ecclesiastical centre of Scotland. St Andrews has many tourist attractions such as the Cathedral, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (the oldest in the world, St Andrews is known as ‘the home of golf’) and St Andrews University. St Andrews University is the second oldest in the English speaking world being founded in 1403 and now having over 8,000 students many of whom are English. St Andrews University is often listed as one of the best in the UK in terms of Educational League Tables.
Fife also contains RAF Leuchars and contained Rosyth which housed the Royal Naval Dockyards, now privately owned by Babcock International.
