 | About Falkirk |
|
Falkirk is a town on the East coast of Scotland North of Edinburgh positioned where the Union Canal meets the Forth and Clyde Canal. Falkirk was one of the main centres of the Industrial Revolution, and was the earliest site of iron-casting in Scotland and had vital importance after the Forth and Clyde Canal was completed by John Smeaton in 1790.
Two Battles dominate the history of Falkirk; in 1298 William Wallace was defeated near Falkirk when he fought the English led by King Edward. The next major battle to be fought was won by the Scots led by ‘The Pretender’ Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1746, the English Commander Henry Hawley were soundly defeated and Bonnie Prince Charlie marched South to Derby and beyond.
Part of the Antonine Wall lies near Falkirk and stretches across 37 miles Scotland and was built in 142AD.
Falkirk Wheel is a rotating wheel like device which raises boats 80 feet from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. This feat of engineering was opened by the Queen in 2002. The lift is so-called due to the way its gears lift boats up in a circular manner. |
