About East Lothian

East Lothian is a county in the East of Scotland near Edinburgh with a population of 92,000. Larger settlements in East Lothian are Scotland oldest town Musselburgh, Dunbar, Prestonpans and Haddington.

Notable people from East Lothian include religious reformer John Knox, signee of the American ‘Declaration of Independence’ Rev. Dr. John Witherspoon, Prime Minster Arthur Balfour, Scots King Alexander II and outlaw and cannibal Sawny Bean.

Sawny Bean and his savage ‘clan’ (or extended family) lived off human flesh and were born in the 16th century, killing at least 40 people during their rampage. Not unlike modern horror films his close knit family lived apart from decent society and murdered passers-by to feed on their flesh. The clan extended itself by incest and numbered over 35 before it was finally caught and executed (by bleeding to death and then fire) in Leith in Edinburgh. The cave which held the family is still a tourist attraction to this day.
