 | About Dundee City |
|
Dundee is one of the major cities of Scotland positioned on the East coast on the bank of the River Tay with a population of over 143,000.
Dundee has been settled since Iron Age times and is known as ‘The City of Discovery’ due to one of its’ greatest attractions the RSS Discovery which was the craft that Robert Falcon Scott ‘Scott of the Antarctic’ and Ernest Shackleton used to explore the polar zone in 1901. She was the last 3 master wooden vessel made in the UK.
Dundee City has two major educational organisations: University of Abertay and University of Dundee. University of Abertay was founded in 1994 and is a world leader in computer games and technology; it has 3,900 students making it one of the smallest in the UK. University of Dundee has 18,000 students and was part of the University of St Andrews until 1954 when the rising population of Dundee required a stand alone educational institution.
With the decline in shipbuilding during the last few decades the main industries are: textiles (jute), electronics (NCR Corporation cash machines), electrics (Morphy Richards Home Appliances) and finance. As all school boys will know DC Thompson makers of ‘The Beano’ and ‘The Dandy’ are based in Dundee, one of the world famous characters DC Thompson produced was Desperate Dan. |
