Dumfries and Galloway is a county in the South of Scotland with a population of 148,000 and borders onto Ayrshire to the North and Cumbria to the South. Dumfries and Galloway is positioned right on the border between Scotland and England and has a land mass of just under 4,000 sq miles making it the third largest after Argyll and Bute and Highland.
The area has always been associated with livestock farming particularly sheep and manufacture of luxury handmade textiles.
Stranraer is a notable town in West Dumfries and Galloway famous for as being ‘The Gateway to Northern Ireland’ through Belfast. Stranraer has a population of over 10,000 and is an important logistical and tactical port with sea links to Ireland, south to England and Europe.
Gretna is a small town on the border of Scotland and England which is famous for a marriage destination for English couples who ran away to be married under more laid back Scots laws. |
