Angus is a county on the East coast of Scotland bordering on Aberdeenshire, Perth and Dundee and has a population of 109,000. The largest towns are Arbroath and Forfar.
Agriculture, livestock (cattle) and fishing are the main industries in Angus. A local speciality is Angus Cattle or Black Angus Cattle (due to their all over black colour); Angus Cattle are the most popular livestock in the USA with over 300,000 extant.
Arbroath is the largest town in Angus with over 22,000 inhabitants, famous for its Jute textile industry and its local delicacies (The ‘Arbroath Smokie’ is a smoked Haddock cooked in a cask for its flavour). Arbroath was the site of the original ‘Declaration of Independence’ in the 14th century which gave Scotland independence from the English call the ‘Declaration of Arbroath’.
Forfar is Angus’s county town and has over 13,000 inhabitants and is home of the ‘Forfar Bridie’ a tasty meat based pie or pastry made with onions and spices.
Glamis Castle is a popular tourist attraction in the Strathmore Valley 20km from the North Sea, and is the birthplace of The Queen Mother. It features gardens, statues, turrets and spires and beautiful fittings which are admired by thousands of tourists every year. |
