Aberdeenshire is a county on the North East coast of Scotland which borders on Angus and Perth to the South and Moray and Highland to the West. The largest towns are Peterhead, Inverurie, Fraserburgh, Stonehaven and Westhill.
Aberdeenshire has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and has important historical sites such as Slains Castle which was constructed in 1527 but has been rebuilt several times since. Slains Castle was the inspiration for the classic horror novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker who travelled from Cruden Bay to see the semi-ruined keep.
Aberdeenshire contains Balmoral Castle which is a castle and country estate used by the Royal family for their summer holidays since 1848. Balmoral Castle and grounds covers over 160 sq miles.
Peterhead in the largest town in Aberdeenshire and has a population of over 17,000, famous for its fishing especially white fish it also has an important RAF base nearby. The main employers are fishing, engineering, HM prisons, oil refineries and ancillary services, hotels and the NHS. |
