Aberdeen City is a city in the North East of Scotland with a population of over 202,000 usually give the nickname ‘The Granite City’ due to the locally quarried grey granite that was used to build the city from the 18th century. The name comes from the local rivers Dee and Don that merge near the city.
Traditional industries include fishing, textiles, paper making and ship building however modern Aberdonians are more likely to be employed in deep sea fishing, oil traction and refinement, research and technical science.
Significant oil deposits were discovered in the North Sea off Aberdeen in the 1970s, making the city the centre of oil extraction in Europe. The oil business caused regeneration and development Aberdeen due to the passing trade and highly paid off shore workers spending time in the city.
The city hosts two world class educational providers in The University of Aberdeen (founded in 1495, making it the fifth oldest in the English speaking world, with 13,700 students) and Robert Gordon University (granted university status in 1992, 12,000 students).
Aberdeen was once an important centre for fishing however has now been surpassed by smaller ports Peterhead and Fraserburgh.
