Slough is a town and Unitary Authority of 119,000 inhabitants 22 miles from London with a land mass is 12.6 sq miles making it one of the smallest in the UK. The county of Slough also covers Colnbrook and Poyle.
Slough Trading Estate was the first in the UK. Ford Motors, Horlicks, Nintendo, Black & Decker, O2, Amazon, Dulux and Citroen have all had factories in Slough through the years however recessions in the1960s and the 1980s caused many of them to close.
As with many ‘new towns’, such as Cumbernauld and Milton Keynes, Slough has been criticised for its grey, industrial outdated construction and layout but is home to over 60 listed buildings such as churches, Victorian almshouses and King Johns Palace at Colnbrook. Slough is to be redeveloped in a £400 facelift, the centre point of which will be ‘The Heart of Slough’ a ultra modern town centre and public space.
