North Somerset is a Unitary Authority on the South West coast of England with a population of over 210,000 and borders on the city of Bristol. Towns in the region include: Portishead, Weston-Super-Mare and Clevedon.
Weston-Super-Mare is the largest town in, and administrative centre of, North Somerset with over 71,000 inhabitants. The town is famous as a seaside resort for workers from all over the South and London in particular, in recent years it has suffered with a decline in tourists due to the growth in overseas holidays.
Portishead is a small town with 17,000 inhabitants many of who commute to nearby Bristol to work. Portishead had a thriving transportation docks moving coal and iron around the Empire, these were closed in the mid 1970s
Another popular tourist destination during the Industrial Revolution up to recent times was Clevedon which presently has 22,000 inhabitants. The town is home to the Curzon Cinema which is one of the oldest in the UK and the longest continuously open in the UK.
Famous residents include: architect Isambard kingdom Brunel, comedian John Cleese, author Roald Dahl, poet Alexander Pope, Chancellor and philosopher Francis Bacon, author Henry Fielding, landscape painter JMW Turner, poet Laureate Lord Tennyson and shipping magnate Robert Cunard. |
