The County of Herefordshire is a county on the West coast of England with a population of 177,000 making it one of the smallest populations in England.
Hereford is a beautiful Cathedral city with a population of over 50,000 and dates from a settlement on the site in around 700AD. The name comes from the ‘here’ or a formation of soldiers and ‘ford’ a river crossing. Employers include food production (Bulmers Cider and Sun Valley frozen food) plus nickel alloys and steel working. Hereford Cathedral dates from the 7th century, however was in a ruined state until Norman times when it was restored as the seat of the Bishopric.
Agriculture is the most notable industry in the area with fruit groves (apples and pears), dairy farming and potatoes being the main crops. Herefordshire is famous for the cider which it produces, manufacturers include Bulmers.
Places of note for tourists visiting Herefordshire are Hereford Cathedral and Dore Abbey which was founded in 1147 and used until the 15th century.; |
