Hampshire is a coastal county on the South coast of England with borders on Wiltshire, Dorset and Surrey with a population of 1.69 million. The county town of the region is Winchester while other notable towns are Basingstoke, Gosport, Waterlooville, Aldershot, Farnborough and Eastleigh. Southampton and Portsmouth are contained within Hampshire but are now Unitary Authorities in their own right due to the large populations they have.
Hampshire contains the New Forest which has been the traditional area left aside for the Kings Deer Hunt, as it was of little agricultural value. It stretches across part of Hampshire and into Wiltshire over 220 sq miles. The area has been designated National Park status.
Basingstoke is a traditional market town and has over 80,000 inhabitants. The town has below average unemployment and a large proportion of the jobs are hi-tech jobs such as computer software design and finance. During the Industrial Revolution the town was famous for producing steam engines, traction engines and agricultural machinery.
Gosport is a town with 77,000 inhabitants and was once associated with defence logistics and is now a popular tourist destination with old forts and Iron Age sites.
Famous residents include: author Charles Dickens, architect extraordinaire Isambard Kingdom Brunel, author Jane Austen, crime writer Arthur Conan Doyle, actor and comedian Peter Sellers, writer and poet Rudyard Kipling, author and inventor of science fiction HG Wells. |
