 | About East Riding of Yorkshire |
|
East Riding of Yorkshire is a county (or a Unitary Authority) in the North East of England bordering on Lincolnshire and the rest of Yorkshire having a population of 587,000. The area is split into two, one along the Humber and another on a plain towards the North Sea with a total land mass of 957 sq miles. The largest settlements in East Riding of Yorkshire are: Bridlington, Goole, Hessington, Driffield and Cottingham. The East Riding of Yorkshire is one of the least populated counties in England with only 137 people per sq km.
Bridlington has the largest population of any town in East Riding of Yorkshire with 33,000 inhabitants. The town has a long and varied history which goes back to the day of William the Conqueror, the town was invaded by the Normans in 1066, then the Dutch in 1666 and was bombed extensively by the Germans during WWII in 1940.
Stamford Bridge is a village of just under 4,000 inhabitants which is famous for the Battle of Stamford Bridge during the Viking invasion of 1066. The Anglo-Saxons under King Harold Godwinson defeated the Vikings from Norway under King Harald Hardrada, this was a hollow victory as two weeks later the Normans invaded the South, killing the English King at the Battle of Hastings and taking over England. |
