Devon is a county based on the far South West of England bordered on Cornwall and Dorset. Devon is the third largest county in England and has a population of over 1.2 million over an area of over 2,500 sq miles.
Devon has been inhabited since 6000BC and due to its southerly position it has been occupied by the Romans and the French, both cultures leaving their marks on the landscape and people of Devon. Due to its geography Devon has always had links to the sea namely exploring and empire building, trading and fishing.
Exeter is Devonshire’s only town with just over 100,000 inhabitants. Exeter sits on the banks of the River Exe which gives it its name and has a population of over 110,000. The town is noted for its University, Anglican Cathedral and International Airport. Exeter Cathedral was completed in 1400 and has the largest vaulted ceiling of any construction in the UK and features an ‘Astronomical Clock’ and 32 foot high ornate organ which is still in use.
Devon contains Dartmoor an area of 368 sq miles which has National Park Status, and is notable for its granite outcrops and expansive moorlands.
Famous Devon residents include: veteran writer Agatha Christie, explorer Sir Francis Drake, explorer Walter Rayleigh, social reformer Mary Carpenter and inventor Charles Babbage. |
