Derbyshire is a county in the East Midlands of England with almost 1 million inhabitants. Derbyshire contains part of the Pennines mountain range and part of the Peak district (a national parkland containing woodland and moorland).
Natural resources such as coal led to major mining excavations fuelling the industrial revolution and providing jobs for a large percentage of Derbyshire. Mills and mines were the largest employers during this period

The life of mining families could be harsh due to dangerous conditions, low wages and temporary nature of the industries.
