Cornwall and Isles of Scilly is a county placed on the extreme West South corner of England with a strong separate identity even having its own language (closely related to Welsh and Gaelic). Cornwall and Isles of Scilly has a population of over 500,000 people and a land mass of over 1740 sq miles making it one of the largest in England. Ports in Cornwall include Penzance and Falmouth. Cornwall has one of the lowest population densities in England.
The main town and administrative centre is Truro, which is the only city in Cornwall. Truro is famed both for its Georgian Architecture and being the most Southerly city in England. Truro has a population of just over 20,000 and is dominated architecturally by Truro Cathedral built in the gothic-revival style from 1880 to 1910.
Isles of Scilly are a small archipelago cluster of islands 28 miles to the West of the Southerly tip of Cornwall. There are over 140 islands in the Isles of Scilly, the largest of which are St Marys (population 1,667) and Tresco (population 180), however most are uninhabited.
Cornwall is dominated by its extensive coastline and nature reserves, bird sanctuaries and sites of historical interest including Roman settlements, Celtic sites and Norman sites. |
