Cheshire is a county in the North West of England south of Manchester with an area of over 900 sq miles and population of just under 1 million inhabitants. The major towns are Warrington and Chester however it also contains Crewe, Congleton, Widnes and Macclesfield
Major industries in Cheshire are aerospace (BAE systems and Airbus, Hawker-Siddeley and Avro Lancaster) motor cars (Jaguar, Vauxhall Motors and Bentley) and agriculture with especial mention to world famous Cheshire cheeses which are sold across the world.
Chester is the county town of Cheshire and is positioned on the river Dee on the border of Wales. Chester was colonised and fortified by the invading Romans however it is the medieval walls and architectural that provide the historical interest.
Warrington covers an area of 180 sq miles and contains over 180,000 inhabitants and is based on the North of the Mersey River and is traditionally associated with heavy industry such as textiles, steel, tanning and brewing. Warrington has been a historically important town both during Roman time and the English Civil War which resulted in victory for Oliver Cromwell.
Crewe was the centre of the railway industry during Industrial Revolution and still a major rail hub. |
