Cambridgeshire is a county in the East Midlands of England covering 3,000 sq miles with a population of over 750,000. The main town is Cambridge with over 130,000 inhabitants which is partly famous for its prestigious university (second only to Oxford) and the fact that over 25% of inhabitants use their cycles to travel making in unique in the UK
Cambridgeshire is world renowned for its university which is the second oldest in the English Speaking world dating from 1209AD. Cambridge University is famous for its illustrious members including: Isaac Newton, Charles Babbage, Charles Darwin, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, William Pitt the Younger and Alan Turing.
Cambridge has no cathedrals however there are several noteworthy chapels (some related to the university) including Kings College Chapel, Great St Marys Church and St Johns College.
Cambridgeshire contains ‘Silicon Fen’ with various hi-tech industries such as software, biotechnology and electronics and is second only to Silicon Valley in California USA in terms of Venture Capital investment. ‘Silicon Fen’ gets its name from the fenland which was drained to make room for it and both ‘Silicon Glen’ in Scotland and ‘Silicon Valley’ in California USA.
