Brighton and Hove is a single city which was granted city status in 2000 and has a population of over 250,000 and covers an area of 33 sq miles in East Sussex.  Brighton and Hove was granted Unitary Authority status in 1997 due to its rising population and split from East Sussex.

Brighton is popular as a getaway from the London area due to its relative proximity and is famous for its beach front open air concerts, varied nightlife and alternative lifestyle friendly attitude.
